God debate

Postby Supersage400 on Thu Apr 09, 2009 2:34 am

I assume I'm greatly outnumbered. That makes it more fun.

I don't believe in God because there's no convincing evidence for his existence, just as there is none for Santa Claus. I hold the probability of a God's existence to be on an equal level with that of Santa Claus and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

If someone can show me evidence or make an argument that suggests otherwise, I'll gladly reconsider my position. If you believe what you do, then I assume there's something that convinced you into it and so you can defend your belief. So please: if you're convinced you have the truth, then enlighten me.

I believe because I have felt the presence of God in my life and have seen it working. It's not something I can explain or am willing to argue, because there's no way you can tell me what I do and don't experience, but unless you have that experience, you will probably just scoff. I also believe that the story of Jesus surviving this in tact for so long is incredible and the pure weirdness of the situation at the time gives it some testimony. Back then Jewish people wanted their Messiah to be a king who would take back everything for them. Jesus was birthed in dishonor (a bastard child, in the eyes of society), and he died the most dishonorable death that anybody could have dreamed of in that day. In fact, the Romans outlawed crucifixion not long after Jesus' death. I think that because of the unbelievability of someone in such "dishonorable" circumstances being divinity and dying for us is a strong testimony to the story being true.

"I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." - C.S. Lewis

That is why I believe. God has changed my life in a why that nothing else I have experienced has.. And it not only has changed my life. I see it changing my moms life and slowly my dads and my sisters and my friends.

Neither of those things say anything for the truth of God. I would ask the first person what she thinks about Muslims who have also had personal experiences but attribute them Allah instead. I'd ask the second person the same question, more or less. Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Greek Mythology, etc. have all produced similar positive effects. Why don't you adhere to one of those religions instead?

There is none. Just like there's no proof The Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't exist. Or Bertrand Russel's Celestial Teapot. None. You simply can't do it. That's why the burden of proof is with you, the person making the claim, and not me, the person denying it.
